CIC Application Processing Times
CAIPS Notes
CAIPS is short for Computer Assisted Immigration Processing System. It is a computer based system used by the Canadian Immigration offices to record ongoing status and process visa applications. There are two useful systems in this regard; CAIPS and FOSS.
CAIPS: Computer Assisted Immigration Processing System is an automated system for applications being processed in the overseas offices of CIC outside Canada. Information is recorded on computer system based on documents and forms received by that Visa office.
FOSS: Field Operational Support System is the main operational support for Immigration operations within Canada.
Some important notes on CAIPS NOTES:
- CAIPS notes are useful for anyone who has applied for any visa at a CIC office outside Canada. This is therefore useful for people who have applied for any immigration visa, student visa, visitor visa, or work permit.
- The most common reason applicant's request their CAIPS file is when they have been selected for an interview. The CAIPS file will normally have information as to why the applicant is being interviewed. Next important reason could be to find out how the immigration officer assistant has computed your points before your file is assessed. This gives you time to react before the visa officer assesses and hence save you a lot of time.
- Other reasons could be to find out why there is a delay in your file or when is the processing officer going to look at your file which generally gives you an idea of the processing time for your case.
- Only a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a person in Canada, with valid documents can request CAIPS on your behalf.
- You need file number of your case to request the notes. In the absence of the file number you could use your full name, date of brth and address to request but it is faster if you have a file number.
- You can request CAIPS notes as many times as you like and there is no negative bearing on the processing time of your file or the outcome of your case.
- The Ottawa office in Canada is required to respond to CAIPS request within 30 working days but it may take upto 38 working days before you get the file.
